By Mohamed Bakayr
March 27, 2010Somali region of Ethiopia is trying to honour Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan by locating his burial place and blessing his remains if found.
Sayid Mohamed stands for Somalism and patriotism. Sayid Mohamed, a house hold name among the Somali people, was one of African leaders who fought for their respective countries and defied colonial theories and their objectives. He was born in 1856 and died in 1920. His grave is believed to be somewhere close to Imay town of the Somali region of Ethiopia; however, the exact spot of the Sayid`s tomb isn’t known, a matter that has concerned and occupied the Somali people.
Sayid Mohamed had spent a great deal of his prime time in wars aimed at expelling European colonial powers from Somalia. He fought furiously with Britain in many parts of Somalia; he was obstinate and confused his rivals to the extent they doubted about the state of his mind. They nicknamed him the``Mad Mullah of Somalia``.
Sayid Mohamed was attached to particular spots of Somalia. Taleh town was one of his favourite bases; he built it with his own hands and composed poems for it. He had been blessed with committed supporters who had stood by him until the last minute of his determined life.
It was Taleh where the Sayid and his supporters got air-bombarded by British warplanes, making the town the first town in the African content which was air-bombarded by a European warplane. Sayid Mohamed and his supporters, the dervishes, didn’t know what was attacking them from the blue sky above them, let alone defend themselves. They perceived the planes to be birds because they hadn’t seen any planes before the bombardment.
Sayid Mohamed was defeated and forced to flee Taleh. After the defeat, he, accompanied by some of his supporters, escaped to Ethiopia. Shortly after, he passed away in the Somali region of Ethiopia, but his tomb has never been known to many people. Most individuals who knew the exact location of the Sayid`s tomb are dead for a long time now. However, some say that very few, senile individuals who can reveal the details of the Sayid`s grave may be alive, making the region`s search efforts attainable. If the Sayid`s tomb is found, it will be blessed and put in sanctuary.
